GitHub Pages is a static file hosting offering from GitHub to host content directly out of a GitHub Repository.

Pages is free for public repos with GitHub Free.

By default, GitHub Pages are hosted at <user>.github.io/<repository>.

Configuration

GitHub Pages must be enabled in your Repository Settings page. Visit Settings > Options > GitHub Pages.

Select a source branch to build GitHub Pages. It can either build from the branch root / or the /docs directory. Only these two roots are usable. If you need to build your docs from another path consider using a GitHub Action to push that directory onto another branch to build from the root of that branch.

Registrars: Google Domains and Squarespace

Google Domains no longer exists. Google sold its domain registration business to Squarespace in 2023, and all registrations were migrated to Squarespace Domains over the following months. Existing registrations carried over automatically, including renewal pricing.

brisberg.dev was originally registered with Google Domains and now lives at Squarespace. Renewal pricing was grandfathered at the original rate.

The rest of this page is kept because the concepts are registrar-independent — the DNS record types and their behavior are the same everywhere. Only the UI moved.

Custom Domain: brisberg.dev

brisberg.dev is registered at Squarespace Domains (originally Google Domains). Content is served by GitHub Pages; the domain sends and receives no mail.

The authoritative name servers are still Google’s — ns-cloud-d{1,2,3,4}.googledomains.com, i.e. Google Cloud DNS. Squarespace is the registrar and provides the editing UI, but migrated domains kept the Google Cloud DNS backend. This matters in two places below: the record editor’s validation rules are Squarespace’s, not the DNS backend’s, and DNSSEC is enabled.
